SIP for a Target

This works the SIP calculation backwards. You name the amount you need and the year you need it, and it returns the monthly investment that gets there at your assumed rate of return. It is the more useful direction, because a target is usually the thing you actually know.

What this assumes

Every calculator here states what it took for granted. A result whose assumptions are hidden is not worth much.

  • Instalments are paid at the start of each month.
  • The return is a constant nominal monthly rate and does not vary year to year.
  • The target is in today’s rupees unless you have already inflated it yourself.

How to use it

  1. Enter the amount you need, in the money of the year you need it.
  2. Set the number of years you have.
  3. If the monthly figure is uncomfortable, extend the horizon before raising the return.

Illustrative only. Not a projection, not a guarantee, and not investment advice.

Common questions

Should my target be in today’s money or future money?

Future money, in the year you actually need it. If you are planning something whose price rises, such as education or a wedding, inflate the cost first. The child education calculator does that step for you.

The monthly number is more than I can afford. What now?

Lengthen the horizon if the goal allows it, since time does more work than contribution. Otherwise reduce the target. Raising the assumed return until the number looks comfortable is the one option that changes nothing in reality.

A number is not a plan.
