Financial Assessment

A financial assessment is a full read of what you earn, what you spend, what you owe and what you already hold, ending in a number: the gap between where you are now and where you want to be. Start with your goals and questions; you do not need to choose a product first.

A conceptual scene of two people discussing a financial plan

Who this is for

  • Anyone who has been investing for a while without a clear picture of whether it is enough
  • People with money spread across several accounts, policies and funds and no single view of it
  • Families about to take on something big, such as a home loan or a child's education

You will leave with

  • A written summary of what you hold and what it is doing
  • The monthly figure that closes your largest gap
  • A straight answer on whether your existing cover and investments are already adequate

How it works

  1. Bring what you have

Salary or business income, EMIs, insurance policies, mutual fund statements, fixed deposits. If the paperwork is not to hand, come anyway and we will work from what you know.

  2. We build the picture

Income against outgoings, what is already committed, what your existing holdings are actually doing, and where the same money is being counted twice.

  3. We name the gap

One number, or a small set of them: the shortfall against each goal you have, and what monthly figure closes it at a sensible rate of return.

What actually happens

Most financial advice starts with a product. This starts with arithmetic. Before anyone can sensibly say “you should invest in X”, somebody has to work out how much you need, by when, and what you already have working towards it.

That is the whole of a financial assessment. We sit down, put your real numbers on paper, and see what they say. Sometimes they say you are fine. Sometimes they say you are eight years behind on retirement and the sooner you know that the better.

Why the order matters

A recommendation made before the arithmetic is a guess dressed up as advice. It might be a good guess. You have no way of telling, and neither does the person making it.

Doing it the other way round means every later decision has something to be measured against. When we suggest a monthly investment figure, you can see where the figure came from. When we suggest you do nothing, you can see that too.

What this is not

This is not a regulated financial plan produced by a SEBI-registered Investment Adviser, and we do not charge a fee for it. We are an AMFI-registered mutual fund distributor. The disclosures page sets out exactly how we are paid and what that means for the advice you receive. It is worth two minutes of your time before you take anyone’s recommendation, ours included.

What should you prepare for this conversation?

Bring a rough monthly income-and-spending total, outstanding loan balances, existing investment statements and current insurance cover. List each goal with an approximate date. Estimates are enough to begin; separate confirmed figures from assumptions.

Understand asset allocation. See how the first meeting works and how Harbla Finserv is paid before booking.

Common questions

Does a financial assessment cost anything?

The first conversation is free. Product costs are separate. For mutual funds, fund houses pay distributor commission through regular-plan expenses. Ask about charges for any other product or service and read our disclosures before deciding.

Will I be pushed to buy something at the end?

No. If your existing investments and cover are adequate, that is what you will be told. A recommendation only follows once the arithmetic shows a gap worth closing.

What if my finances are a mess?

That is the normal starting point and it is exactly what the assessment is for. Nobody is judged on their spreadsheet. Most people have money in several places and no single view of it.
