Fixed Deposits

A fixed deposit pays a rate agreed in advance for a term agreed in advance. Bank FDs additionally carry deposit insurance up to the DICGC limit; corporate FDs pay more precisely because they carry the company's credit risk with no such insurance. The word "fixed" describes the rate, not a guarantee independent of the issuer.

Risk
Bank FDs are insured up to the DICGC limit. Corporate FDs carry issuer credit risk in full.

Who this suits

  • The emergency fund, and money needed on a known near date
  • Savers who value a known number over a probably-higher one
  • Senior citizens using the higher rates banks offer them

What to be careful about

  • A corporate FD's extra rate is the price of its risk. Check the credit rating and remember insurance does not apply.
  • Premature withdrawal usually costs a rate penalty. Ladder several smaller deposits instead of locking one large one.
  • FD interest is taxed at your slab rate, so the after-tax, after-inflation return is often near zero. Fine for safety money; poor for long-term growth.

The right job for an FD

An FD may suit a dated expense when its maturity and withdrawal terms match when you need the money. Check the institution, applicable deposit protection and early-withdrawal conditions. Do not assume a corporate deposit and a bank deposit carry the same risk.

The honest arithmetic

Compare the return after applicable tax with your inflation assumption. The real return calculator shows how these inputs affect purchasing power; it does not establish that an FD return will be positive, zero or negative after inflation. Check the calculator’s assumptions against your own tax position.

Corporate fixed deposits are distributed under separate arrangements; issuer ratings and terms are available when we talk.

What should you compare beyond the FD rate?

Check who accepts the deposit, its term, interest payment schedule and the terms for early withdrawal. Ask whether deposit insurance applies to that institution and deposit, rather than assuming every fixed deposit has the same protection. Read the provider’s terms before committing money you may need soon.

Common questions

Are fixed deposits completely safe?

Bank deposits are insured by DICGC up to the prevailing limit per depositor per bank, which makes them the benchmark for safety at that scale. Corporate FDs are loans to a company with no insurance behind them; the rate is higher because the protection is absent. "Fixed" describes the rate, not the certainty of getting it.

Why not keep everything in FDs?

Because interest is taxed at your slab and inflation runs against the rest. Run the real-return calculator on an FD rate after tax and the answer is frequently close to zero. FDs preserve; over decades they rarely grow. Safety money belongs here; long-horizon money mostly does not.

What is an FD ladder?

Splitting a sum across several deposits with staggered maturities. Something is always close to maturing, so an emergency rarely forces a penalty, and you re-price to current rates a piece at a time instead of all at once.
